Civil engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses designing, building and maintaining the naturally and physically built environment such as roads, bridges, dams, canals, highways, irrigation systems, skyscrapers, power plants and much more.

It is the second oldest form of engineering, falling in right behind military engineering. The term civil engineering was used to distinguish military engineering from any form of non-military engineering; civil engineering jobs can be found in both the public and private sectors at all levels.

Civil engineering is often divided into several categories including construction engineering, irrigation engineering, transportation engineering, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering, land development, environmental engineering, coastal and ocean engineering, and geotechnical engineering; so a civil engineer has many job options available to him/her under the broader civil engineering heading.

A civil engineer is simply a person who does civil engineering; in some places a civil engineer is allowed to do land surveying, while in other places they are restricted to only construction surveying unless they obtain additional certification for land surveying.

To become a civil engineer, a person will usually be required to complete at least a four year degree in civil engineering or in some places, a license; the civil engineering degree requires a lot of mathematics and physical sciences so it may be daunting for some if they do not have a liking for these subjects.

Since civil engineering covers so many critical areas and is so important for the development of a country – after all they are responsible for designing the infrastructure in every country around the globe, qualified and competent civil engineers should be able to find jobs fairly easily as their line of work is always in demand. Even if you are having trouble finding a job in your town or even in your country, rest assured that somewhere in the world civil engineers are needed; it is just for you to find exactly where.

There are many job offers out there for civil engineers if you are willing to relocate to get them; since the internet is undoubtedly the largest database available to you, performing a search online for jobs for a civil engineer will produce dozens of results all around the world in every division of civil engineering.

Since many of the sites allow employers to post their listings and their requisites for available jobs, you are able to communicate directly with employers in various parts of the world that you would have a hard time contacting otherwise.

It is up to you to decide whether you want a temporary, contract or full-time job and the country that you want it in; if you think you would like to do a little globe-trotting you could take a series of temporary jobs for 3-6 months at a time in various countries. If you want to learn about one country and its culture and then return home you could try a contract job; if you are thinking of relocating permanently then something full-time is probably best.
